Hatching is one of the most popular drawing techniques used in manga. It can serve many purposes, from coloring to adding volume and motion (that's what we are here for). For example, in sports manga like Haikyu!! or Ace of the Diamond no action scene can do without hatching.

To show how hatching works, we've grabbed the inker, the g-pen, and the graphite pencil. The inker and the g-pen did most of the work — actually, because it's all made of quick strokes to show the character in motion and highlight the dynamism of the scene. We tried to "speed up" the player with more dense, intense hatching, while the ball seemed to freeze in slow-mo, achieved with light strokes and pencil-drawn shades.

Exactly the same inker and g-pen were used in the colored version. To paint it, we used a marker and a brush pen, which precisely mirror the physical tools and leave soft, smooth strokes.
